What is Vircadia?

In short, Vircadia is a social metaverse platform and engine. It is completely open source and decentralized whilst still maintaining its always connected functionality. Think VRChat or Second Life except with far less restriction on your ownership, control. As a result, your creativity in the worlds have no bounds.

Because of the high efficiency and of the platform servers, the cost to run your own instance is very low. A basic server can run on a $10/mo server from Digital Ocean, which you can scale up as needed for events or to support more of your friends in the virtual world.

There are really no limits on what you can do with Vircadia. To name a few, you can host small gatherings, teach classes, and give tours of various subject matters (think being on location of a historical site or being in a lab!). Or you can host live shows for comedy or music. Amongst that, you can simply just spend time with friends scripting / modeling the world around you.

The idea is that we create an engine, a platform for you to immerse with.

What you do with it is up to you.

But wait! There’s more!

Our focus is User Experience.

For a while, the High Fidelity engine has lacked in terms of what it could offer to the user’s experience. From confusion about controls to various glitches on core features (e.g. avatar movement, UI quality, etc.) Because of this, our focus will be to try and work through and solve these items in parallel with improving stability and refining features.

After all, what good is a nifty new world if you can’t immerse into it?

Anyone can contribute.

The interface & server is programmed in Qt and C++. On top of the interface is the Javascript scripting engine that allows you to make and alter the entities, avatars, and the world. The Metaverse API implementation which handles user accounts and group management for domains is currently programmed in C#, .NET Core. And finally, the interface launcher is an Electron app created with the Vue.JS framework.

All of these come together to form the Vircadia FOSS ecosystem. They work in tandem but are distinctly separate. Contributions and help are valued for all aspects. Testing, platform building (Windows, Mac, Linux), feature additions, and bug fixes are all things that help improve this project for everyone.

We are volunteers.

You can expect us to have day jobs and various other responsibilities. We will have to dedicate time to those things in parallel, it’s just the nature of working on open source. However, we are very passionate about the metaverse and what it has to offer for all of our lives. Therefore, it is that drive that will keep us moving forward and continuing good work on this Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).

We are in Alpha.

This means that while the platform is in a usable state, it should also be considered that there will be bugs. We want to iterate quickly and find the best possible stable solutions quickly! As such, you can expect great deal of patches, changes, and overall improvements to the ecosystem regularly.

Questions? Thoughts?

Every Saturday we hold developer meetings @ the “Hub” world in Vircadia from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM PST.

There are also community maker meetings every Saturday @ “The Palace” from 12:00 PM to 1:00PM PST, and every Monday from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM PST.

Use your explore app to find them, or just drop by at our Discord.

All are welcome to observe, participate, and so on. Come join us as we pursue making the metaverse future a reality!

A Thank You

To the countless developers that worked on the High Fidelity engine before us. Their great work on its every aspect is what has allowed us to assume this position now. We would not be able to move forward without their contributions, and for that we are grateful.

Now, we look to the future with high hopes that we can slowly and steadily achieve our dreams, one step at a time.

So cool to see an open source VR Project with so many of the VR worlds seeming to either go private (HiFi) or seeming to lose focus (Sansar). Thanks for starting this. As well as a big thanks to Phillip Rosedale and his generosity.

Thank you so much to drive VR further – I have liked this environment in the past – so big thanks to you to drive that in future. Also, I hope to have some time myself to develope it with you all
