New Metaverse

Taste the power of connection!

The new Vircadia metaverse server is live for active use with the release of 2020.3.0 Demeter. This means that users will now be using it in an official capacity, stress testing it, finding all the bugs, but also getting full use of its overall features. You can register for the new metaverse here.

The next few weeks will see development of these services while they are live and under active use. Expect bugs, but also expect rapid iteration and improvement on the very same!

What does it mean that Vircadia has added a metaverse system to the project? It means that the circuit is complete on an infrastructure to support social virtual worlds. The metaverse server fundamentally provides account and domain interoperability services. This is vital to help foster consistent growth of virtual spaces in a shared way.

With time it will expand to support multi-metaverse operation and various other services such as user storage and expanded user-to-user communication where features such as direct-voice and chat become first-class integrations to enable a more involved social experience.

The metaverse server and its dashboard for admin and user interaction is Apache 2.0 licensed. This ensures that companies and individuals alike can fully utilize and expand on the platform that the Vircadia team has created and will continue to develop.

You need 2020.3.0 Demeter for your Interface & Server!

For the Interface, it’s just a simple download, install, and go!

For domain-servers: Please backup your domain-settings and domain-content as a precaution. To upgrade your domain-server to the new version, download the installer on Windows or run these commands on Linux.

All domain-servers need to disconnect their server from the High Fidelity metaverse, ensure the Access Token field under Networking / Metaverse is empty. Reboot your domain-server before proceeding to connect to the Vircadia metaverse.

You will also want to clear out username-specific permissions for any person that you cannot confirm is on the new metaverse with the same name. This is because High Fidelity usernames are not reserved on the new metaverse, therefore if someone manages to take the username of someone you’ve already given permissions to in your domain panel… Then this person will now have those permissions instead of the person you had originally intended. So, add usernames as you verify they are indeed who you expect them to be!

For some cases, it may be necessary to delete your domain-server’s config.json file in order for it to connect to the new metaverse appropriately. You can find this file…

  • Windows: C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME HERE]\AppData\Roaming\Vircadia\domain-server

  • Linux .local/share/Vircadia/

Some features may not yet be working on the Vircadia metaverse such as place names and associations with your domain. This functionality will be improved and made available in the coming days and weeks. In general, operation of your domain-server should still work with the Explore App in the meantime.

If you are using the Vircadia Launcher, please download the latest version and ensure that in Settings > Metaverse Settings that the Metaverse Server field is set to empty or is filled with Proceed to download the update, then restart your launcher after the update is done installing in order to launch Vircadia.

New Release

Would you like a side of fresh release with your metaverse?

Vircadia’s team and community have been hard at work to assemble the next release of the Interface and Server: 2020.3.0. It is codenamed Demeter, continuing to follow a naming scheme that utilizes the Greek Pantheon. This release is also a protocol breaker, meaning that upgrading is strongly recommended in order to stay compatible with most users and domains in Vircadia. You will need to upgrade to use the new metaverse.

2020.3.0 Demeter made the Interface and Server compatible with the brand spankin’ new metaverse server. Though, it is not without other changes. This release mainly focuses on bugfixes and technical improvements alongside the addition of a new feature or two. You can read more here.

That’s all good, anything else? Well, glad you asked! The beginnings of a brand new tutorial sandbox made by Vircadia’s own creator community has made it in. This will continue to be iterated and improved, you can visit it using the Tutorial button under the Help menu.

New Hub

The icing on the cake!

We’ve gotten our new Hub setup from one of our newly received and configured content packs. We added a few native touches, but overall the world is as beautiful and functional as ever. Having a performant yet beautiful world allows us to showcase Vircadia’s capability while being able to dedicate more time into creating organic worlds, content, and develop the platform’s core systems.

The world is packaged as “HQ” and is free for anyone to use. This is the first of many to come!

What’s next? 🍻

Soon, we’ll have the ability to swap out our domain content with entirely new worlds and customize them with troves of prepackaged assets curated by Vircadia’s community.

To do this, a new Inventory App will be arriving in order to allow users to discover, use, and share assets. This is part of an ongoing effort to make Vircadia’s worlds and user-developed functionality resilient and accessible.

There are also plenty of upgrades and long-term overhauls planned from our many collaborators.

Artists, developers, organizers, hobbyists: all have made Vircadia their home as we pursue the next chapter in an ever-unfolding story.

Thanks to this month’s contributors!
