Vircadia’s latest version (2022.1.0) is a protocol bump so it is highly recommended that you upgrade your Interface and any domains!
Faster than Ever!
This release has brought with it significant performance improvements, specifically for Linux and macOS.
For macOS and Linux clients, on average the performance increase is estimated at up to 7 to 9 times faster, and in worlds with plenty of models and complex collisions the performance increase can be up to 25 times faster!
Linux servers saw an astounding performance uptick as well. Running idle without any users, a 2-core test world would burn 1.5 cores (150%). After our updates, running idle it only uses 4% of a single core. This means more users can be hosted in worlds than ever before.
Alongside this, we’ve tweaked how graphics settings are handled to hopefully reflect the user’s intent better. We’ve also fixed a texture memory issue that would cause worlds to load in blurry.
This release also features initial web support for developers. This will allow for a user or NPCs to connect using a web browser. Currently it lacks full avatar support among many other features. However, this milestone provides a base level of functionality for web connection with the Vircadia domains to enable a more accessible metaverse through open source.
With each release, expect to see functionality added as development progresses!
Community Spotlight: Prototype Places App
Alezia Kurdis created an application for Vircadia’s native Interface to help prototype and find ways to improve its current “Explore” app used for navigating around the open source metaverse.
Here’s a small summary of some of the recent topics.
- Prototype to test new ways for the “Explore” app
- Emotions as Blend Shapes?
- Is it possible to host vircadia in a private environment
- “Odometer” application
- And more!
Thanks to this month’s contributors!
Join the Open Source Metaverse Revolution
Vircadia is an open source metaverse platform. It is a cross-platform ecosystem, with support for Web natively for end-users and all other platforms (e.g. Windows, macOS, Linux) for developers through SDKs.
We need documentation writers! The platform is constantly evolving and has plenty of documentation to help new users and veteran develoeprs alike take full advantage of it. Even the small things make a huge impact.
If you are multilingual, our international users could use your help!
If you simply want to help out on small things such as typos, errors, short guides, etc. your help and participation is appreciated!
We need developers! Vircadia has many components, you can contribute to any of the following:
- Web Interface
- Interface created with Vue & Quasar
- HTML + TypeScript
- Engine utilizes Babylon.JS
- Metaverse Server
- Web SDK
- Unity SDK
