What it is

It’s an engine to build virtual worlds on.

Vircadia can help you make a personal home world that houses an art gallery, movie theater, or games for your friends. The sky is the limit.

On the professional side of things, it enables you to create a co-working space, product demonstration world, training worlds, and so on.

For groups, It can let you hold large scale events for hundreds of people in desktop and VR simultaneously.

For more advanced use cases, you can use Vircadia as an engine packaged to ship your application/game.

Vircadia can scale to serve any type of need, big or small.

Implemented the way you need it.

  • Clients:
    • Native: Windows, Linux, and MacOS native Interface, offering full desktop and VR support.
    • Web: Access on all platforms through the web browser.
  • SDKs
    • Web SDK: Import a Node module that provides networking interfaces for the domain and metaverse server.
  • Domain Server: Deployed on Linux or Windows. It connects to the Interface to sync: avatars, entities, audio, messages, and server scripting.
  • Metaverse Server: Deployed on Linux or Windows. It provides account management services for the Interface and Domain Servers. An instance of this is hosted by the Vircadia project for convenience.

It is important to note that the Domain server can interface with a third-party client if needed.

Utilizing UDP or WebRTC you can create a client with Godot, Unreal, Unity, etc. that connects to the Vircadia Domain server. Utilizing a REST API you can connect an app to the Vircadia Metaverse server.

To make things simple, we have also created an SDK for the web that you can import as a module into new or existing projects to interface with the Vircadia Domain & Metaverse server in your own solution.

Ultimately, this enables you to take advantage of the powerful and distributed nature of the server architecture that allows it to serve hundreds of users in one instance, irrespective of the client.

Define

The sort of world you desire: personal or professional. Or possibly a packaged application that utilizes Vircadia on the back-end?

Design

Using Blender for 3D modeling (glTF & FBX) and access to Vircadia’s content repositories.

Create spatial 2D user interfaces using web technologies such as Vue, React, Angular, etc.

Build

Script up the actions of your world or packaged application/game using JavaScript.

Craftable World In Motion

You can tweak every aspect of Vircadia in real-time. If you have a larger project, remember that every core component of Vircadia is FLOSS (Apache 2.0) so the sky is the limit.

What it isn’t

It’s not a closed social platform.

Second Life, VRChat, Sansar, etc. are solid social platforms and excel at their respective roles. Vircadia does not attempt to fulfill that role directly with exclusively centralized hosting and a business plan based on a constant flow of activity on a closed-source network.

Vircadia’s focus is on living in virtual worlds, which is something that can only be achieved with a free and open source foundation. There is a diverse range of open source projects for virtual worlds. However, Vircadia is the only actively developed end-to-end virtual world solution that is freely available to use under such a liberal license (Apache 2.0). This enables maximum freedom and versatility for every type of user or implementer of the platform.

Ultimately, Vircadia is an engine to build experiences on top of. Our focus is on VR, real-time networking, and ease of integration. It is relatively easy to start with, hard to master, but well worth pursuing due to its scalable architecture.

A VRChat or Second Life competitor is more likely to be built using the Vircadia virtual reality engine rather than to spring from Vircadia itself.

Enables virtuality now. Implements the future.
